9 Unusual Ways to Earn Extra Money

Just when you thought that every way you can start a side hustle or earn extra money has been thought of or written about and discussed between you and your friends, new possibilities can appear that are easy, fast, and hit you with a “why didn’t I ever think of that” smack in the head. That’s exactly what this list represents! In some cases they’re completely new 21st century related actions that can get you into the game. But even old can be new again with some ideas morphing into new ways to earn and get you out of your current money hole and into prosperity!

9 Unusual Ways to Earn Extra Money

So sit down and read this list and see if you can pick just one of them to increase your monthly income!  There’s something for everyone here so get started now.

1. Invite them to dine

Believe it or not, there are now websites like Mealsharing and Feastly, just to name two, offering you the chance to host a dinner party for strangers like world travelers or people who travel locally. You get to serve a home cooked meal at reasonable prices and also great profit!  If you have the skills and the space, invite 4-6 people over, serve them your delicious meal, and deliver a “real local experience” right in your home to make up to $15 a serving! These companies have set up shop in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and New York City as well various cities in South America, Europe, and The Far East.

2. Move it

You can actually become a part-time mover by registering at places like Movers Corp.  Make yourself available to help someone move their furniture around, deliver packages and boxes, etc. Usually for a couple of hours you can earn up to $25 per hour. You can specify what you can and can’t do which appeals to lots of men and women with limited time. Work some Saturdays and add the potential for a couple of thousand extra dollars this year!

3. Sell your old mobile phones

I’m betting you’re like a lot of people and have several old models of your mobile phones in a box somewhere along with chargers, cases, and all sorts of accessories. You can sell those for quick money and for that matter ask you friends about it too. If they give you some, give them 50% of the take and you’ll both be happy. Try Gazelle online or ecoATM for local options.

4. Drive your income higher

It’s become an everyday side hustle and it’s growing fast. Companies like Uber and Lyft are providing the chance to earn really nice money by simply driving people to their appointments, friends, and necessary functions with their own cars and their own gas money. After that cost you can easily make $35 an hour or more. What would be easier that doing something you do mostly every day for yourself anyway?

5. Get paid to listen to music

Cash just to listen to some new artist or band? That’s right, check out Music Xray to find opportunities to make from $0.50 to $10.00 for a few minutes a day checking these new artists. If you love listening to music, turn it into bucks!

6. Distribute flyers and leaflets

This one’s pretty simple: hire yourself out to distribute advertising leaflets, brochures, flyers, or promotional attention grabbers. You can even be costumed to be a themed mascot or any promotional character. You can get paid about $50 bucks for every 1,000 items you can distribute along streets and parking lots. You can go online to look for local companies and printers or even better, check out the local chamber of commerce and contact retailers and service clients that routinely hire for seasonal distribution.

7. Get cash for your scanned receipts

Check out the Ibotta app to see what marketers will pay you for a copy of a receipt you have obtained as a proof of purchase for $5 for a grocery item offer to up to $10 that you get from Best Buy as a proof of purchase. These aren’t technically rebates but rather compensation to prove a real life purchase.

8. Sell your class notes and books

It’s been around awhile but it’s still a great idea to make some money on no-longer-needed notes, books, or anything you received for your personal education or work training.  Typed notes sell best but clearly written scanned notes are also in great demand. Check out your local colleges and universities to start making money right away or use sites like NoteUtopia or Nexus Notes.

9. Become a mystery shopper

Here’s one I have actually tried and believe me it’s fun and pretty easy. You get paid to do things like make purchases and evaluate products, customer service, and the ability of store employees to follow their company’s rules and regulations. Your assignment can get made more complex and lead to higher wages and bonuses too. In the case of dining out, you also get the bonus of eating a free meal! You work undercover and sometimes record your observations on tape but in all cases you report back to your employer with emails or internet portals. There are some scammers out there in this area, but use common sense and never pay for an opportunity. 1. Liz

I use the Walmart Receipt casher sometimes, and even though I’ve been doing it for over two years, I’ve only made about $11. It’s because most of those deals are on name-brand products and I buy generic on almost everything. Still, when I go to cash that in, I’m going to feel good.

The hosting a meal in your home sounds like a wonderful idea! I can make some pretty great “countrified” meals that people might enjoy. I may have to check into that. Great post! I didn’t know about some of these!

  2. Emily @ JohnJaneDoe

Now the next time I travel anywhere I’m going to have to check out the meal sharing sites. I may not feel up to providing the service, but I think I’d love to experience it and get the inside info from the locals (as well as great food).

  3. Tyler @ I Am The Future Me

Great ideas, I would just say though about driving for lyft or uber. The prices have gone down lately which has caused many passengers to be happy but the drivers are making less (in my city it was cut by 30%). You can still make decent money but I think the days of $35 an hour after costs are long gone.

  4. Jayson @ Monster Piggy Bank

Nice list on how to earn extra money. I have some old mobile phones here. I am glad that I didn’t throw it all away. Gary, the site Gazelle is really awesome!
